Acne and Smoking
There is a contradictory report between smoking and acne. About 350 people with acne have got offer of a questionnaire related to smoking habits.
Persons with other skin diseases have attended the skin clinic in the Tehran, Iran. People must complete this type of questionnaires in the room of waiting.
Results
293 persons who are suffered with acne have a respond rate about 83.7 percent and a respond rate approximately 86.0% of 301 persons with another skin problems.
They have done the questionnaires of habits of smoking. It has considered that they all were smokers and between them, about 12 acne patients and about twenty-seven control patients.
Conclusion
It is concluded that there is no association amongst cigarette smoking and acne.
Background
There are many form of acne, but acne vulgaris is the main type of acne. Many teenagers’ boys and girls, adults, men and women are affected by this skin problem. There are large numbers of factors for developing acne such as Ultraviolet radiation, Sweating, Diet, Menstruation, Occupation and Stress.
However, a study has shown that it can be developed with the cigarette smoking. But it is not confirmed by others scientist. Hence, it is evaluated the relationship between cigarette smoking and acne vulgaris.
Methods
In Tehran, Iran, a skin clinic has been attended by about three hundred fifty people with acne vulgaris and the same number of persons with other skin diseases and in the waiting room a questionnaire of habits of smoking has completed by them.
Any skin disease like acne has detected by the present of cysts, nodules, papules, pustules and comedones. The data has analyzed by the SPSS to this disease.
Results
About 293 people who are suffered from acne and three hundred and one people suffered from other skin diseases have completed questionnaires of habits of smoking.
About 86.0% responded rates of three hundred and one people and approximately 83.7% response rates of two hundred and ninety three people respectively. There are many current smokers in which 12 acne patients and twenty-seven controls patients.
The mean age or average age of the persons with acne approximately 26.09 years and 22.08 years in control group. There are about 9 smokers are found in 64 males who are suffered from acne and about 20 smokers are found in 116 who are not suffered from acne.
There are three smokers between 229 women who are suffered from acne and about 7 smokers between 185 who are not suffered from acne. The smoking and duration was not different from the two groups.
Conclusion
It is concluded that there in no any association between smoking and acne. A study has shown that there is a wide age range, which is from 15 years to 40 years.
In some cases, there are large numbers of adverse effects on the skin, which are associated by cigarette smoking. Many protective effects of smoking are also occurred such as ulcerative colitis, pemphigus vulgaris and acne rosacea.
