The family doctors treat the acne patients. If the cases are complicated then the person can contact a skin disease specialist, a dermatologist, an endocrinologist and other specialists who treat the endocrine system’s disease.
Acne is also one kind of skin disease, so it is not difficult to diagnose.
The doctor examines the patient thoroughly and the examination is based on the complete medical history which includes the questions about the diet, medication use, skin care, factors which causes flare-ups and the prior treatment.
Physical examination is also conducted by the doctor that includes the shoulders, face, back, upper neck and other affected areas. The doctor also examines the blemishes present on the face, the type of acne, whether they are superficial and deep or inflamed, whether there is skin discoloration or scarring.
Laboratory tests are not done till it is not confirmed that the person is having acne or not or suffering from any other disease. In many cases, blood analysis and other tests are done. The costs of diagnosis and treatment of acne are covered by the most insurance plans.
Symptoms of Acne
The symptoms of acne are found in both men and women including teenagers. The most common symptoms of acne are recurrent and persistent red spots and swelling on the skin which is known as acne. Acne can be found anywhere on the body. Acne occurs due to the high concentration of sebaceous glands in the areas which includes upper back, chest, face, neck and shoulders.
Some of the symptoms are:-
- Dark spots with open pores
- Red spots, swelling or lumps filled with pus around the affected area
- Inflamed fluid-filled lumps under the skin which is known as cysts
- Pain and itching around the affected area
- Scarring is also one of the symptom of acne
- Social problems
- Psychological Trauma
- Diabetes
The other types of symptoms which the person experiences are:-
Whiteheads
It appears as a skin colored or white bump under the skin’s surface. This is also known as closed comedones and is caused when dead skin cells and oil block the pores.
Blackheads
These are the small and dark in color and occur when the pores are blocked by the dead skin cells and oil and are exposed to air.
Nodules, Pustule or Papule
This is a pus-filled small pimple which is formed around the hair follicles or sweat glands. It causes redness around the affected area and causes pain. This can also leads to scarring on the face.
Pus-filled lesions
These are white colored pus spots which convert into yellow after sometime.
