Types of Acne Scar


Scars caused by acne are most common and some people have mild and some have severe acne scars. The best option is that the person should treat the acne in an effective way as the mild acne can lead to scarring.

Some acne leaves permanent acne scars on the skin which cannot be treated. It is very difficult to examine that which type of acne will lead to mild scarring and which results into permanent scars.

These acne scars are the major problem and embarrassing for the people as it affects their social life by diminishing their self confidence and makes the skin old. Acne scars can be extensive or scattered and deep or superficial.

Acne scars are the result of two types of tissue response which are the cause of acne and they are:-

Loss of tissue

Acne scars which results from this type are more common and they are:-

Atrophic Macules

This type of scar is flat and soft and is violet or bluish in color on white skin due to the blood vessels. These scars fade away on their own.

Depressed fibrotic Scars

These scars are in the form of large scars that have steep sides and sharp margins. They resemble like deep chicken pox scars. After sometime, ice pick scars are converted into depressed fibrotic scars. Some filler materials such as collagen and restylane are used to fill the depressed scars. These scars can be treated by the laser acne scar treatment.

Follicular Macular Atrophy

These acne scars appear as small and soft in touch which looks like whiteheads and usually affects the chest or back of a person. These types of scars normally take a long time for development.

Ice-pick Scars

These scars are usually small in diameter and contain steep sides. They may be deep or superficial. They are soft or hard to touch. The hard scars become deep whereas soft scars become superficial. Dermabrasion, punch grafting and laser resurfacing are some of the treatments by which this type of scars can be treated.

Deep and Superficial Soft Scars

These scars have sloping edges and variable in size which merges with the normal skin on their own.

Increased Tissue Formation

Scars resulted by this type are caused due to the building up of collagen in the skin. There are two types of acne scars which results from increased tissue formation and they are:-

Hypertrophic Scars

These types of scars are common in the young people with dark skin. These scars are not completely prevented and some people have inherited tendency to these scars.

Keloid Scars

Keloid scars can be caused on any part of the body including the shoulders and upper chest. This type of scars is more common in dark skin people.
